Fresh from the Orange Box tree comes a juicy pair of modern-day US Navy (USN) vessels made precisely in 1/700 scale. Specifically, the two models are USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) and USS Nevada (SSBN-733). The first is the lead ship in an extensive class of guided-missile destroyers. Named after a former USN admiral, this first-of-class destroyer was commissioned in July 1991. Arleigh Burke destroyers are built from all-steel construction and feature a more stealthy design than previous classes. USS Arleigh Burke participated in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, firing Tomahawk cruise missiles and performing interdictions in the Arabian Sea. USS Nevada, meanwhile, is an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine that was commissioned in 1986 after being built by General Dynamics. The submarine with 16,764-tonne displacement carries 24 Trident II D-5 ballistic missiles, as well as Mk-48 torpedoes.
Both these vessels are in current service with the USN, so this Orange Box set provides modelers with the solid foundation for a modern warship fleet. The two models are richly detailed and a pleasure to assemble, coming as they do from Dragon’s popular 1/700 scale lineup of Sea Power ship kits. To bring them up to the latest standard, the kits have received brand new Cartograf decals for that final decorative touch. These fine models also come at a very reasonable price, in keeping with Orange Box’s budget-beating philosophy.
