Germany based its Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyer on the chassis of the ubiquitous and reliable Panzer IV tank. The Sd.Kfz.162 mounted a lethal 75mm main gun in a fixed superstructure or casemate. The low-profile vehicle was actually designed as a replacement for the successful StuG.III, and it was built in three variants. Orange Box has released a set featuring one of these variants – the Sd.Kfz.162/1 Jagdpanzer IV L/70(A). This vehicle featured the long-barreled PaK 42 L/70 gun, the same as that fitted on the formidable Panther tank. This particular tank destroyer was actually fielded as an interim design solution by Alkett. It thus lacked the sloping nose of the more common Vomag production version. A total of 278 were built by Alkett from August 1944 to March 1945, with the “A” in its nomenclature referring to its manufacturer.
The Orange Box set offers a remarkable 1/35 scale rendition of this Alkett Jagdpanzer IV. It is well engineered and carefully crafted to accurately recreate the original vehicle. For this release the kit has also been updated with a set of Magic Tracks that considerably ease assembly for the modeler. As with all Orange Box items, its value is unrivaled thanks to the addition of an identically scaled figure set. In this case it includes a set of four soldiers from a Volksgrenadier unit fighting in the Ardennes offensive. The sharply sculpted figures are wearing winter uniforms appropriate to the timeframe of this battle, though of course modelers can adapt them to any other scenario they choose. These figures and 1/35 scale tank destroyer kit complement each other very well, and continue to uphold the Orange Box philosophy of unbeatable value!
