Russia experienced heavy equipment losses in 1941 and early 1942, plus most of the nation’s heavy industry had to relocate further east to evade advancing German forces. The USA and UK provided Lend-Lease vehicles to help their Russian ally in its time of need, including an astonishing 351,000 trucks and 51,000 jeeps. While Stalin played down the important role played by Allied Lend-Lease equipment, it accounted for nearly 10% of all Russian war materiel. Tanks were also supplied, including 1750 M4A2 Shermans armed with 75mm guns, and 1850 M4A2s armed with 76mm guns. Many Allied tanks weren’t warmly welcomed by their Russian crews, but more capable tanks like the M4A2(76)W made a better impression with their stabilized guns, radios and reliability.
An M4A2(76)W with its more potent main armament and better armor protection is the subject of a new Dragon 1/72 scale plastic kit. To achieve the particular configuration exported to Russia, this kit has received a newly tooled turret with a subtle surface texture reflecting its cast manufacture. It also has a brand new engine deck. Finesse is guaranteed with photo-etched parts for items like the front fenders and tool rack. The complicated suspension system is represented in high-quality parts that are easy to assemble, while the T-49 tracks are molded in DS to achieve maximum detail. This M4A2(76)W is set to be another runaway success in Dragon’s 1/72 kit series, and modelers will certainly not want to lend or lease them after they get their hands on one!
