Dragon’s newest 1/72 scale kit depicts a rather special multinational M4A2 – an American tank supplied to Russia, but captured by Germany! As the tide turned against Germany and equipment shortages became more and more acute, captured enemy tanks such as Russian Sherman M4A2s were often pressed back into service. Entitled a ‘Beutepanzer M4A2’, this kit comes with small touches such as a set of new decals that allow it to be turned into a vehicle operated by new German owners. The basic M4A2 kit itself has also received new embellishments such as newly tooled idlers and dished road wheels. Technology is well utilized, with components such as the low-bustle 75mm turret and 75mm gun barrel all made from slide molds. Further refinement is provided by parts like photo-etched front fenders and a tool rack, while T49 tracks made from DS make assembly more convenient. This German Sherman is an outstanding model and its new ownership makes it stand out from the pack.
The M4 Sherman was the most widely produced American tank of WWII, and it equipped several Allied armies. The diesel-engine M4A2 was never used in combat by the U.S. Army, but it was fielded by the USMC, the UK, France, Poland and the Soviet Union. A great many M4A2 Shermans were supplied as Lend Lease vehicles to the USSR during its time of desperate need as it fought for survival. In fact, with approximately 4250 M4A2 tanks sent to Russia, it was supplied in larger numbers than any other British or American tank. Around half of this figure had 75mm guns, while the remainder had 76mm guns.
