The 24-ton Hornisse (German for “hornet”), later renamed by Hitler as the Nashorn (German for “rhinoceros”), was developed as an interim tank destroyer in 1942. It mounted an 8.8cm PaK 43/1 gun, and the Hornisse had its combat debut at the Battle of Kursk. A total of 494 of these tank destroyers were produced, and they were used primarily on the Eastern Front or in Italy.
The key feature of this newest 1/72 Hornisse is the terrific Neo tracks, these track links offering the perfect balance between accuracy and assembly. They come with pre-assembled straight runs of tracks, for instance, while they can also be realistically sagged. Other parts come as individual links where appropriate to get them to conform to the shape of sprockets, etc. All details are accurately presented, including the highly detailed and visible 88mm long-barreled gun mounted inside the open-topped fighting compartment. In the kit box there is also a generous selection of photo-etched parts that allow modelers to upgrade the appearance of this powerful German tank destroyer. Thanks to the addition of these Neo tracks, this little hornet can inject a tremendous amount of pleasure into a modeler’s collection!
