The 4th Armored Division was sometimes unofficially referred to as the “Breakthrough” Division. This is precisely what the division did on December 18 1944, two days after Germany launched its sudden and savage attack through the Ardennes. During what historians refer to as the Battle of the Bulge, the division’s first units raced northwest into Belgium in a 150-mile march that took just 19 hours. From December 22-26, the 4th Armored Division pounded the life-threatening “bulge” caused by von Rundstedt’s offensive. The aim was to relieve the 101st Airborne Division besieged in Bastogne. Finally, the first Sherman tank crossed the remaining few hundred meters of the Arlon-Bastogne highway and relieved the city’s defenders on December 26.
One of the tanks involved in this heavy fighting was the M4A3E8(76)W depicted in this latest release in Dragon Armor’s 1/72 scale range. This tank belongs to the 35th Tank Battalion of the 4th Armored Division. Interestingly, in order to present a less conspicuous target, the white stars on the turret have been blackened. The model is technically accurate and sturdily constructed, with even the smallest details beautifully rendered. The vehicle is exceptionally well finished in its olive drab paint scheme and markings. The Battle of the Bulge was an epic engagement for the 4th Armored Division, and this fine model is an ideal way to commemorate it.
