The Sd.Kfz.223 was part of the Leichter Panzerspahwagen family of reconnaissance vehicles, and it featured a machine gun in the small turret. This variant is easily recognized by the prominent frame antenna mounted atop the hull, an item needed because the Sd.Kfz.223 was fitted with a long-range radio set that enabled it to keep in touch with reconnaissance vehicles roving across the battlefield. A total of 550 Sd.Kfz.223 vehicles were made between 1935 and 1944. To permit a greater range through the desert, this reconnaissance vehicle has extra jerry cans stowed on the front of the hull. For modelers wishing to boost their collection of DAK vehicles, this little armored car from Dragon Armor will go far!
Dragon Armor has just released a fine 1/72 scale model of an Sd.Kfz.223 from the early stages of WWII. That model was painted in a dark gray camouflage color suitable for the early blitzkrieg campaigns conducted by German forces. Now, hot in its tracks comes an exciting variation of the Sd.Kfz.223 in completely different colors and markings! The new vehicle, built to the same small scale, portrays a vehicle from the 21st Panzer Division. This formation, one of two armored divisions that made up the famed Afrika Korps. It fought under the command of the “Desert Fox”, Erwin Rommel, in the arid and sandy landscape of North Africa from 1941-43. As such, the model is painted in an accurate sand color suitable for desert warfare, plus it bears the appropriate divisional and DAK tactical signs. The latter palm tree insignia are accurately painted on the hull.
