Dragon Armor has created a 1/72 scale model of an M4A3E8 Sherman tank from the 714th Tank Battalion. This unit, one of three tank battalions, belonged to the 12th Armored Division, a formation raised on 15 September 1942 in Kentucky. It arrived in England in October 1944 before heading to France. The “Hellcat” Division waged bloody battles along the Maginot Line before sealing the Colmar Pocket and then racing to and crossing the Rhine River in March 1945. The model shows one of the tanks used in this late period of the war as the Third Reich crumbled. The M4A3E8 “Easy Eight” featured the Horizontal Volute Suspension System (HVSS) with wider tracks, plus a long-barreled M1 76mm gun.
The particular tank represented by Item No.60555 is nicknamed “St. Louis Blues”. Interestingly, this tank from the 714th Tank Battalion has had half of the white stars on the turrets blackened out to present a less conspicuous target to enemy gunners. The model is technically accurate and sturdily constructed, with even the smallest details beautifully rendered. The vehicle is exceptionally well finished in its olive drab paint scheme and markings. Dragon Armor has produced quite a number of late-war German tanks and tank destroyers, and now they’ve gained a worthy opponent in the form of one of the most effective American tanks of WWII.
