“Achtung! Achtung!” Dragon has released a 1/6 scale kit of the Torn.Fu.d2 transceiver, and it is extremely realistic in its presentation. The radio cases measured 390 x 340 x 190mm (height x width x depth) in reality, and every detail has been reproduced in miniature, right down to the case locks and latches. The back-straps are made of leather and cloth in order to make them more lifelike. There are also useful ancillary items such as headphones (for the original set had no built-in loudspeaker), microphone and an antenna with their associated cables. This radio set is produced in a very sophisticated fashion, and it is the perfect accessory for German soldiers about to engage in combat. “Over and out!”
Radios were a vital technological innovation of the mobile type of warfare conducted
in WWII. Germany standardized the production and use of its radio equipment
in the 1930s, and its panzers were rampant throughout Europe in 1939-40 largely
due to their ability to communicate via radio. As far as infantrymen in the
field were concerned, one of their most important pieces of equipment was the
Torn.Fu.d2 VHF two-way transceiver. This portable radio set was designed to
be carried by two men, and provided communications in the A1 ‘Telegrafie tonlos’
mode and A3 ‘Telefonie’ mode in the 33.8 to 38MHz frequency range. Manufactured
by Telefunken from 1936 onwards, it offered a range of 10km in the A1 mode.
The Torn.Fu.d2 transmitter and receiver were powered by a 2B38 rechargeable
battery and two 90V dry batteries.
