Allied troops had to counter thickly armored German tanks during WWII. American infantry were equipped with the famous bazooka, but something extra was still needed for light forces to help them counter the enemy armor threat. One solution was the M20 recoilless rifle, which was developed by the Ordnance Development Small Arms Division from 1944 onwards. The key feature of a recoilless rifle is that the perforated shell casing and rear-vented breech greatly reduce the level of recoil. Production of the M20 commenced in March 1945, meaning only limited numbers saw service in the closing days of WWII. Instead, the 75mm M20 recoilless rifle saw considerable use in the Korean War, but despite being designed as an anti-armor weapon it proved inadequate when engaging the T-34. Nevertheless, the M20 was effectively used against lightly armored vehicles, soft-skin vehicles and field fortifications. Eventually, recoilless rifles like the M20 were phased out in the 1960s-70s in favor of wire-guided missile systems.
Dragon’s newest 1/6 scale weapon kit is an M20 recoilless rifle. The original 2.08m-long weapon has been perfectly scaled down, and the model is replete with fine detail. The kit fits together accurately owing to careful engineering by Dragon’s designers. The weapon can be elevated and traversed on its M1917A1 tripod, which allows modelers to pose the weapon in any position or direction they wish. Although the gun could be fitted on a jeep, Dragon has depicted the model in its portable light infantry role. The new M20 recoilless rifle makes a perfect companion to other 1/6 scale American support weapons that have already been released in this popular series, models like the Bazooka, M2 .50-cal machine gun, M1919 machine gun and 60mm mortar.
